Photojournalistic & Traditional Photography – What’s the Difference?

When you’re choosing a photographer for your wedding, you’ll notice that a lot of articles and pamphlets tell you how important it is to find out whether the photographer’s style of photography is photojournalistic or traditional. You probably know it’s good to research the style of photography you’re interested in, but maybe you’re thinking, “Ok, so what exactly is the difference between photojournalism and traditional wedding photography?”

Traditional photography is a little easier to define, so let’s start there. Chances are when you think of traditional photography you’ll think of your parents’ wedding albums – I know I did! But there’s more to it than that. Traditional wedding photographers take an active role in directing your wedding day – you will likely be asked to step aside for the posed shot before the actual thing, and the photographer will focus on creating the “timeless” family portraits that we expect to see in most wedding albums.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you have photojournalistic photography. For these photographers, their goal is to capture the essence of your wedding day, the emotions you experience throughout the ceremony and reception. Rather than directing your day to create memories for you, photojournalistic photography unobtrusively captures the fleeting moments that you will be experiencing.

Even though I’ve been already married for a little over six months (time flies!), I am already glad that we chose a photographer that didn’t direct our every move, but let us enjoy our day. I admit, we enjoy having the “traditional” church group shots and other posed images, but we also love the candid moments captured by our photographer. My experience as a bride has reinforced the way I photograph weddings – a blend of traditional and photojournalistic styles that is just right!

At Betsy’s Photography we want to make sure that the majority of your wedding day is YOURS. While it’s important to provide some direction so you look your best for the formal pictures and the key “events,” we’d like to let you relax and enjoy yourself for the rest of your day – so we step back and let you be you! We’ll make sure you have the all-important family group portraits if you want them, but more importantly, our job is to listen to you! No matter what happens, I’ll be there to make sure you’re able to enjoy yourselves – I want your wedding day to be as wonderful and memorable as mine was!

Choosing The Right Look for Your Portrait

Whether you’re planning on a more relaxed portrait session or want something formal, it’s important to think about your attire ahead of time. We will make you look great, there’s no question, but choosing appropriate clothing will help you to look even better!  The right choice of clothing will help focus the attention on you, rather than your clothes. In this issue of Betsy’s Photography, we will highlight some dos and don’ts regarding clothing choices.

Keep it Simple: A general rule is to keep things simple. Stripes, polka dots, and extravagant patterns have their place, but usually such patterns will end up hogging all the attention. A better bet for making sure that you’re the star of your portrait is to stick with solid colors. For outdoors environmental portraits, khaki, gray, green, and black are great choices – especially if your portrait session is around a wooded area. Brighter colors can be worn, but work better in an urban setting or in the studio – if you’re not sure about something, just ask! We are always happy to go over wardrobe choices and help you decide which options are the best. If the day of your session arrives and you still can’t decide between your favorite gray sweater and that trendy new shirt, just bring them both! We are here to make sure your portrait turns out great – why not let us help you to decide on the right look for your portrait too?

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Most of us know of someone in our lives who has been diagnosed with some type of cancer; My husband and I both have family members who have been diagnosed (read a note from a cancer survivor below). Regardless of how advanced the disease, dealing with cancer is a very stressful and scary situation. Because cancer has affected our lives and the lives of our family members, we want to do everything we can to raise awareness and support cancer research.

We are again participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) walk in Ann Arbor on October 14th, 2006. We will be walking about 3.5 miles, starting and ending at the Michigan Stadium. We have been involved with this event for the past two years, and plan to keep on walking!

If you’d like to get more information about MSABC, or if you want to make a donation, visit my participant website to find out more!

Letter from a Cancer Survivor:

“My family and I will be walking on October 14, 2006 here in Ann Arbor, MI for the breast cancer walk for myself and my sister who both are survivors. This will be my 3rd year for walking and some of my family have walked for 4 years. The walk is a 3,1/2 mile walk. The last half hour is a struggle especially when I haven’t taken the time to get in shape. God bless all of you who have supported me with your love, prayers, thoughts, words and deeds.”

Whether you can join us in person as we walk to make strides against breast cancer, or if you’ll be there in spirit, we’d love your support. Visit my participant webpage to learn more about this event, and to see when MSABC events will be held near you!

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive walk supporting the American Cancer Society’s unique mission to fight cancer on four fronts: research, education, advocacy, and service programs

Update (10/16):
Last weekend, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk occurred. We were blessed with nice weather (it was cold but not hailing or snowing — both of which had initially been predicted by the weatherman). This year’s walk was a little different, as the route had been shortened and changed to avoid construction I believe.

Our team raised $1,169 for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Special recognition goes to the employees of Knight’s Restaurant and Knight’s Market for the donations that they made.

Thank you for your support, whether you contributed through donation, participation, or even if you were keeping us in your thoughts! Thanks for helping to make a difference!

There’s So Much to Decide for My Wedding!

Whether you’re just starting to plan your wedding, or you’re counting down the last few days to your big day, chances are you know what it feels like to be faced with “too many” choices. While it’s true that there are a lot of decisions you can make about your wedding, you can take some steps that will make your life easier. Weddings require a lot of choices to be made– but it’s worth it! When your wedding day arrives, you’ll get to see everything come together seamlessly and enjoy the beauty of beginning a new chapter in your life.

The wedding professionals you choose to work with will make a big difference as you make decisions. You’re not just choosing between steak and chicken or different wedding albums; when you choose a particular business, you are choosing the person who will work with you to make your wedding day extraordinary!  At Betsy’s Photography, we don’t just provide photographs from your event – we take a genuine interest in you and your soon-to-be spouse. I have been through the process of getting married; I know what kind of planning it takes. Beyond just providing photographic coverage on your wedding day, I am here for you – to provide support and suggestions, and also to make sure that your wedding day will be as memorable for you as ours was for us!

Do you know someone else getting married (or recently married)? Your friends are a great source of knowledge, why not take advantage of the research they’ve already done? Check with them to see what vendors and wedding professionals they chose and why! This will give you a starting point and some names to check out (or maybe some places to avoid). We checked with relatives and friends as we planned our wedding – they were able to provide us with some good suggestions, and even moral support!
